In October 2015, Japan introduced the “My Number” system. Under this system, every citizen with a Resident Record (including medium to long- term residents and special permanent residents) receives a personalized 12-digit individual number (My Number). This number is needed for certain administrative procedures.
Your My Number will be assigned to you when you complete moving-in procedures at your local municipal office upon entering Japan. A notification card with your My Number will be sent to you. Please keep this safe.
*Please bring ID, such as your Resident Card, when completing procedures using your My Number.
